Belize Aquaponics
On February 7th, Noon Rotarian and club foundation chair, John Kazor (pictured above, left) shared his experience in Belize as part of the District's Global Grants Committee research trip.
Kazor provided an overview of the planned aquaponics grow-bed project and the six villages in southern Belize that would benefit from the project.
Aquaponic grow-beds are a closed system whereby fish--living in the aquaponic tanks-- provide "fertilizer," delivered in the water, to the plant roots in the beds.
While the planning, preparation, and execution of the trial aquaponics grow-bed in Belize was successful, the 20-person project team found that the housing and co-sponsor support (local Rotarians) was insufficient to scale the project to the target of 100 Rotarians on the ground in Belize.
For this reason, the Global Grants Team expanded its search for other international project opportunities. This lead to discussions with Rotarians in Guatemala that could lead to several project opportunities for our District. Be watching for more information on this soon!
