Health Literacy: Do You Really Understand Your Doctor’s Orders?

This presentation will addresses one of the most pervasive and under-recognized problem in medicine:  Low levels of health literacy (the ability to obtain, understand, and use health information).  The new Plain Writing Act, and the National Action Plan to Improve Health Literacy will be discussed along with success stories and how you can talk to your doctor!

About Candy Wade

• Retired teacher with 32 years of teaching (Teacher of the Year for LISD and teacher of the year for BEAM (bilingual/ESL Assoc. of the Metroplex); listed in Who’s Who of American Teachers
• Retired administrator and owner of Home Helpers, an in-home care company (received a national marketing award her first year of business in 2007 and in 2018 received national recognition for customer satisfaction (99.3%, conducted by a 3rd party)
• Founder of Seniors Standing Tall Coalition and 2nd Time Prom (Area Agency on Aging uses this coalition for Best Practices in the state of TX for community involvement in educating the public on fall prevention.)
• Currently works for HIS Cornerstone out  of Houston,  presenting  CEU programs in area hospitals in north TX; Candy also works for California’s Institute of Natural Resources  as an  on-site coordinator for medical seminars. Several times a month the INR flies Candy to other states for these seminars and that’s why Penny fills in for her for Family of Rotary.
