The Best Supplements for Sleep, Anxiety and Memory Issues
Presenter Dennis Song (left) and LNR club president Dirk Dahlke

Lewisville Noon Rotary club member Dennis Song, owner of Flower Mound Pharmacy (now part of Community Pharmacy) shared his insights last week on the best supplements to promote better sleep, reduce anxiety, and improve memory.

Sleep is vital for overall health, Song noted, but issues like restless leg syndrome, urinary frequency, digestive issues, and poor sleep hygiene (e.g., using mobile devices before bed) all can disrupt sleep patterns. Sleep deprivation not only can leave you feeling fatigued, but also compromises your immune system and ability to heal, decreases mental acuity, and increases cardiovascular risks, Song said. Although conventional treatments include prescription drugs, like Ambien or Lunestra, these can be habit-forming and also have significant side effects. Over-the-counter medications, like Benadryl and PM products, meanwhile, are only effective for short-term use, because the body will build up tolerance to the drugs. As an alternative, Song recommended herbal supplements, like valerian, lemon balm and passionflower, and nutraceuticals or combined products, which blend herbs and amino acids and are pharmaceutically manufactured.

He suggested that people experiencing sleep disturbances work with their pharmacist or health care practitioner to implement a multimodal approach to improve sleep. This protocol could include vitamins to build neurotransmitters, herbal supplements to induce drowsiness and reduce anxiety, melatonin to improve sleep quality, magnesium for muscle relaxation, and bromelain as a digestive enzyme.

Song also addressed the prevalence of anxiety in modern society, noting that prescription medications like Valium, Xanax and Clonazepam have become the norm. Similar to prescription sleep aids, however, these can be habit forming and can trigger other significant health risks. Non-drug therapies, including therapeutic massage, acupuncture, homeopathy, biofeedback, and chiropractic treatment all are viable and effective alternatives that can mitigate anxiety and address any underlying issues, such as vitamin deficiencies.

At the end of his presentation, Song offered input on strategies to improve memory function and overall brain health. The brain deteriorates with age, he noted, and needs to be engaged and exercised, like a muscle. In addition to doing brain-stimulating activities, such as reading or puzzles, Song recommends eating a healthy, whole food diet, getting regular physical activity, and taking nutritional supplements to support brain health, such as Selenium, B-complex vitamins, and curcumin. When choosing supplements, look for manufacturer guarantees of quality control and quality assurance and good ingredients, and ask your pharmacist for their best recommendations.

Welcome New Member Pam Shelton
LNR Club President Dirk Dahlke welcomed our newest member, Pam Shelton (pictured above), at last week's meeting. A former hair stylist who also previously worked in both the travel and medical industries, Pam now works as a licensed realtor with Fathom Realty, based in Denton.

Membership chair Terry Russell (below left) also presented club member Dr. Michelle Martz, D.C. of Trinity Wellness Center with her blue badge, after a lengthy delay when the club stopped meeting in person during the Covid outbreak. We appreciate Dr. Martz's patience and are grateful that her membership is now "official!"
Congrats to Paul Harris Society Members

Several members of the Lewisville Noon Rotary club recently were recognized for their continuing support of the Paul Harris Society. The Paul Harris Society recognizes Rotarians who elect to contribute $1,000 or more each year to the Paul Harris Fund, PolioPlus Fund, or approved global grants. The club receives back 50% of member contributions to the Paul Harris Foundation after three years, paid out by the District Designated Fund (DDF) and global grants, when we allocate matching funds raised through our own fundraising efforts. Lewisville Noon Rotary has used these grants to fund the LISD food banks, among other initiatives that benefit the local community.

Once you’re a Paul Harris Foundation member, your status is perpetual and your contributions are cumulative. For every additional $1,000 in contributions (whether paid in directly or through points donated by the club or other contributors), you get an additional “level” of Paul Harris; e.g., Paul Harris + 1. Each of the club members shown above has achieved multiple-level status, with Jay Agarwal leading the pack at Paul Harris + 8. Thank you to all of our generous Rotarians for their ongoing support of The Rotary Foundation.

For more information about the Paul Harris Society, call donations chair Steve Cox at 972-741-8469.
MISSED A MEETING?
If you want credit for a make-up, contact LNR Membership chair Terry Russell to let him know when and where you attended another Rotary club meeting, or the date and service activity that you participated in to count as a make up. You have two weeks before and two weeks after a missed meeting to make up for your absence. Make-ups are a great way to meet Rotarians from other clubs and become more engaged with the outreach activities we do in the local community!

FAMILY OF ROTARY

Please pray for Bill Collins' step-daughter, Tiffany, who recently underwent emergency surgery for a ruptured spleen after being admitted to the hospital for pancreatitis. She has already been in the hospital for a month and is currently in the ICU, with a long road to recovery ahead of her.

Please pray also for Bill's son, Jim, who is recovering after brain surgery last week to reduce the number and severity of epileptic seizures he has experienced since childhood. The surgery was successful, but Jim still has several weeks of rehabilitation ahead of him to relearn speech and other cognitive functions.

Leslie Thompson's step-mother, Regina, who is battling breast cancer, had a cardiac electroshock treatment to correct her increased heart rate last week before she could continue with chemotherapy. The procedure was successful, and she resumes chemotherapy this week. Please pray that the cancer is completely resolved and she makes a full and swift recovery.

Thank you for praying for Michelle Martz's husband, Keith, whose Myasthenia Gravis currently is under control with medication. Please pray that his doctors still can determine the cause.

Thank you also for your prayers concerning former LNR club member John Blair's son, Patrick. His kidney cancer was resolved with the removal of the kidney and no further treatment is needed!

For any other prayer requests, please send to Audrey Stansbury at audreystansbury@gmail.com.
