A Place for Widows to Heal
Left to right: Presenters Natalie Reid-Knutson and Kjell Knutson of Broken Halos Haven with Rotarian Leslie Thompson

Losing a spouse is one of life's most difficult and painful experiences. The sudden transition from "we" to "me" often leaves widows feeling unhinged, vulnerable, and overwhelmed. If they have children, they not only have to navigate their own emotions, as they encounter a tidal wave of grief, but also look for opportunities to comfort and nurture their kids. Broken Halos Haven was created to help in this process, providing a safe space for widows and their children to regroup--and even rediscover joy--in the wake of a monumental loss.

The grief getaway retreat was founded by Natalie Reid-Knutson in honor of her late husband, Wayne Reid, who died of a sudden heart attack in 2018. A friend invited the young widow and the couple's three children to New York City a few months after the tragic event, so they could enjoy the Christmas holiday away from the home that held so many memories. After Reid-Knutson met and married her current husband, Kjell, the newlywed couple decided to create a space convenient to DFW where other widows and widowers could get away. They purchased a 100+ year old house in the heart of Old Town Lewisville, and over the course of a year renovated the space inside and out with the help of volunteers and donations of labor and materials from several sponsors.

Broken Halos Haven officially opened this summer and offers a unique program that lets guests create a kind of "gift registry" of activities that friends and family can purchase for them. Activities might include a trip to the Dallas Zoo, gift cards for Main Event, or dinner at Prairie House restaurant. Widows (or widowers) and their children can stay for three days and two nights free of charge, and can add additional nights to their registry for people to purchase.

A big thank you to the 38 Interact students from Lewisville High School and LNR club members who joined forces this past Saturday to help keep our town looking spic-and-span. Student volunteers were joined by Rotarians Sue Bowman, James Kerbow, Matt Michel, and Angie Cox for the monthly Adopt-a-Spot clean up...which, judging by the number of trash bags collected, was sorely needed.
Make an Impact with Local Students
Members of the Lewisville Noon Rotary with Interact Club students in 2019.

The Interact Club at Lewisville High School is a community service club that partners with Lewisville Noon Rotary to connect local students with opportunities to serve in their community. Interact clubs organize two projects every year, one that helps their school or community and one that promotes international understanding.

Sue Bowman currently is looking for volunteers from our club to speak to Interact students about different career options and the benefits of giving back. This is a great opportunity to share about the impact that Rotary International has made in your life, and answer student questions about your line of work as they cast a vision for the future. All meetings are from 11:25 – 11:55am, and speakers are needed for the following dates:
  • October 14, 2021
  • November 11, 2021
  • January 13, 2022
  • February 10, 2022
  • March 10, 2022
  • April 7, 2022
If you would like to donate your time and help support the next generation of world-changers, contact Sue Bowman at SBowman@sampack.com.
MISSED A MEETING?
If you want credit for a make-up, contact LNR Membership chair Terry Russell to let him know when and where you attended another Rotary club meeting, or the date and service activity that you participated in to count as a make up. You have two weeks before and two weeks after a missed meeting to make up for your absence. Make-ups are a great way to meet Rotarians from other clubs and become more engaged with the outreach activities we do in the local community!

FAMILY OF ROTARY

Please pray for Bill Collins' step-daughter, Tiffany, as she recovers from emergency surgery for a ruptured spleen and pancreatitis.

On a happy note, Bill's son, Jim, is doing well after recent brain surgery to reduce the frequency and severity of epileptic seizures he has experienced since childhood.

Please continue to pray for Leslie Thompson's step-mother, Regina, who continues to experience issues with her heart rate that are delaying the remaining chemotherapy treatments she is undergoing for breast cancer.

For any other prayer requests, please send to Audrey Stansbury at audreystansbury@gmail.com.
