Rotarians Rock Final School Pantry Shopping Trip
Click photo to open full-size image.

Lewisville Noon Rotary had a great turnout for the last shopping trip of the academic year to help Communities in Schools North Texas (CISNT) restock the food pantries at eight schools in Lewisville ISD. Special thanks to David Seaman for organizing the event and to LNR club members Becky Kerbow, Matt Michel, Greg Sidwell and Von Beougher for helping as volunteer shoppers. The final tally was $2,000 and the provisions are much needed at this time because the pantries can provide food-insecure students with something to eat over spring break. Thank you Lewisville Noon Rotary for your generous financial and volunteer support!

Lewisville Noon Puts a Stop to Littering
Youth Committee chair Sue Bowman presented Lewisville mayor and fellow Rotarian T.J. Gilmore with a stop sign picked up by volunteers from the Lewisville Noon Rotary and Lewisville High School's Interact Club during the previous weekend's Adopt-a-Spot clean up. Rotarians are encouraged to pitch in at the next Adopt-a-Spot, scheduled for Saturday, April 1st. Volunteers meet in the parking lot of the CVS pharmacy at the corner of 407 and Garden Ridge Blvd. at 8:00am and clean-up generally takes about 30 minutes. Together, we can help put a STOP to littering in Lewisville!

Help Make the Big Fore Our Best Ever
Lewisville Noon's annual Big Fore Golf Tournament is just around the corner, and the Golf Committee needs your help to make this our biggest fundraiser yet!

Currently, Republic Services is on board as our Title Sponsor and eight other businesses already have committed as Major Sponsors. To help us reach our goals for a successful tournament, committee co-chairs Karen Johns and David Seaman and Major Sponsor chair Gary Lewis are asking each Rotarian to sell a Major Sponsor slot or refer a Major Sponsor prospect. Remember, all profits from the tournament go to support more than 20 local charities. With all Rotarians working together, we can break every fundraising record and bless even more nonprofits with grants from the club.

You can download the Big Fore Sponsor trifold brochure here, and print copies will be available at this week's meeting. Questions? Reach out to any of the Golf Committee organizers for help, and thank you in advance for doing your part to make this year's event a big success!
Four-Way Test Contestants Showcase Exceptional Talent

Three ambitious students from Lewisville High School showcased their exceptional presentation skills as they competed in the Rotary Four-Way Test speech competition last week. The speech competition has been held for decades in hundreds of Rotary clubs across the U.S. and is offered to high school students as an optional supplement to their usual school curriculum.

Maurice Tom opened his speech with a rhetorical question: "Why are we so lonely?" Humans are social creatures, he noted, yet due to the impact of technology--from text messages and video calls to social media--meaningful connection and interaction are waning in our culture. He spoke of the benefit of authentic engagement and stepping out of one's comfort zone to develop deeper relationships with others.

Meghana Chinta recalled a horrific time when a friend who struggled with substance abuse nearly overdosed on pills. Although the friend asked Chinta to keep her actions a secret, Chinta applied the Four-Way Test to her circumstances and wisely chose to disclose the secret to her friend's parents.

Olivia Kabano likewise shared a personal story, recounting how her parents fled from genocide in their native country of Rwanda to find safety and make a better life for themselves in the United States. Despite her parents' sacrifices, however, Kabano struggled with feelings of insecurity concerning her African heritage and spent much of her youth feeling like an outsider. She eventually realized that embracing one's cultural identity not only means embracing what is true, but it is fair and beneficial to others.

John Kazor was the official timekeeper for the competition, and Rotarians Philip Herr, Becky Kerbow, Gary Lewis, and Michelle Martz judged the speeches. Each of the contestants walked away with a cash prize, and first-place contestant Meghana Chinta will advance to the regionals in April. The Lewisville Noon Rotary would like to congratulate each contestant on giving a truly outstanding presentation and wish them much success in their future endeavors!

FAMILY OF ROTARY

David Seaman's brother sadly passed away after suffering a heart attack and pneumonia, and being kept on life support until his daughter returned from her honeymoon last week. The funeral is this Wednesday, March 15, at 2pm and will be at Restland Memorial Chapel, 13005 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX. Please keep David and his entire family in your prayers.

Please also continue to pray for former Lewisville mayor Dean Ueckert, as he is on the mend from throat cancer surgery, and for the health of long-time club member Spud Newton, who was back to join his fellow Rotarians at Bistecca last week.

Please pray for the health and safety of Eyad Salloum's family members living in Syria, which has experienced extensive infrastructure damage and loss of life in several cities in the wake of massive earthquakes.

Finally, please continue to pray for Jay Agarwal, who is in India, where he established an orphanage and is involved in many other philanthropic projects.

You can send any specific prayer requests or praise reports to be included here to Audrey Stansbury at audreystansbury@gmail.com.
