Red Cross account manager Tom Blute got Rotarians excited about the club’s upcoming blood drive, when he spoke as the guest presenter last week about the power of a pint. Among its many outreach initiatives, the American Red Cross aims to help alleviate human suffering through biomedical services to make sure hospitals have the blood they need when they need it. Blood drives are part of the organization’s mission to save lives and can help thousands of people in the local community, from trauma victims to cancer patients. Blood drives are always needed, said Blute, adding that 67% of Americans can donate blood, based on factors like their age, weight, and health status, but only 3% do. Lewisville Noon Rotary's annual blood drive is scheduled for June 9, 2023 from 10AM - 3PM at the Cross Timbers YMCA, 2021 Cross Timbers Rd., Flower Mound, TX 75028. If you are planning to donate blood, you should eat iron-rich foods, like red meat, poultry, fish, beans and spinach, for a few days before and stay well hydrated, said Blute. It’s also best to drink an extra four 8-ounce glasses of water prior to your appointment the day of the drive. The club needs 30 people to volunteer and make the June 9th Blood Drive a success. To help spread the word or volunteer with the setup team or checking people in, please contact Dr. Michelle Martz. You can also download the free American Red Cross Blood Donor App to find nearby blood drives, schedule an appointment, and even learn exactly where your donation is sent. |
