Congratulations to LNR club members Gary Lewis (left), Steve Griffin (center) and Steve Cox, who received new pins in recognition of their status as multiple Paul Harris Fellows. Gary Lewis received a Paul Harris + 5 sapphire pin, Steve Griffin received a pin with three rubies for Paul Harris + 8, and Steve Cox received his Paul Harris + 6 pin with one ruby.

The Paul Harris Society is a district-administered recognition program for those who contribute $1,000 or more each year to the Annual Programs Fund, PolioPlus, PolioPlus Partners or the Humanitarian Grants program. Thanks to donations from members of the Lewisville Noon Rotary, the club anticipates receiving at least $3,400 in matching funds from the district to use for local service projects, like stocking the food pantries to help low-income students at seven school campuses in Lewisville ISD.
A Birthday Surprise for a Special Rotarian

John Jennings surprised his wife Mary with a beautiful bouquet on her birthday last Wednesday, as club members sang "Happy Birthday" in her honor. A life-long Lewisville resident, Mary is a past president of the Lewisville Noon Rotary and this past April celebrated 26 years as a Rotarian. She deserved every bit of the accolades she received, and we hope the rest of her day was filled with more happy surprises!
Jiu-Jitsu Instructor Ryan Young Talks Situational Awareness and Self-Defense
Ryan Young, a 3rd degree Dave Kama Black Belt in Jiu-Jitsu, shared basic self-defense strategies at last week's club meeting. (Click photo to open full-size image.)

Continuing the recent presentation theme of crime prevention, incoming Lewisville Noon Rotary president Dennis Song last week hosted featured speaker Ryan Young, a third degree Jiu-Jitsu black belt, who spoke on the topic of self-defense.

“I teach Jiu-Jitsu, but there’s a million different ways you can defend yourself,” said Young, who is one of the instructors at Kama Jiu-Jitsu studio in Flower Mound. A simple solution is to put your phone away and stay aware of your surroundings when you’re out and about, Young said, noting that people tend to be oblivious to others nearby when they are looking at their phone screen.

“Criminals are cowards,” he added. “They’re going to look for someone they can victimize easily.” By practicing situational awareness, you reduce the chances of being their next target.

If you see someone suspicious, make eye contact or even greet them to show you’re not afraid, Young advised. If they come toward you, be prepared to confront them, loudly and forcefully telling them to back up. If you can, try to get to a well-populated place, like a retail store.

“It’s important that you know what’s going on around you,” said Young. If someone is following you and doesn’t back away after your verbal warning, you need to be prepared for a physical confrontation. Keeping your hands casually in front of your face as you speak can let you react quickly if someone comes at you.

“Women, especially, need to know how to defend themselves,” Young said. Even if you don’t train in Jiu-Jitsu, any kind of training that gives you a mindset to fight back will help, whether it’s boxing, Tae Kwon do, or even basic self defense moves, Young added. And if you carry a gun, you need to be trained and prepared to take action if someone tries to physically assault you.

Kama Jiu-Jitsu studio is located next to Community Pharmacy in the shopping center at 1001 Cross Timbers Road in Flower Mound. To learn more about Jiu-Jitsu martial arts training, visit Kama Jiu-Jitsu on Facebook, or check out their website at kamajiujitsu.com.

Did You Miss a Meeting?
If you want credit for a make-up, contact LNR Membership chair Terry Russell to let him know when and where you attended another Rotary club meeting, or the date and service activity that you participated in to count as a make up. You have two weeks before and two weeks after a missed meeting to make up for your absence. Make-ups are a great way to meet Rotarians from other clubs and become more engaged with the outreach activities we do in the local community!

FAMILY OF ROTARY

Please pray safe travels for Leslie Thompson when she heads back to Guatemala in mid-July for a five-day mission trip. Leslie also appreciates any donations toward travel expenses and has posted details about the trip and photos of some of the families the team will serve on her GoFundMe page here.

We also ask God to protect the elderly, those with limited income, and the homeless in our community, as temperatures remain in the triple digits. Father God, please keep them safe from the heat and provide them cool shelter, food, and water. We trust you to meet all their needs, in Jesus' name.

For any other prayer requests, please send to Audrey Stansbury at audreystansbury@gmail.com.
