Collapsed buildings in the town of Harem, Syria, near the Turkish border show a small glimpse of the devastation in both countries after Monday's earthquakes. (AP Photo/Ghaith Alsayed) Please pray for all those affected by devastating earthquakes that struck southeastern-Turkey and neighboring Syria early Monday morning. The first earthquake registered 7.8 on the Richter scale and was followed by a series of aftershocks and a 7.5 magnitude quake the same morning. The resulting devastation spanned both sides of the border between Turkey and Syria, with more than 5,000 people reported dead and thousands more injured as roads buckled and buildings were leveled. Many of you know that fellow Rotarian and incoming LNR president Eyad Salloum is from Syria, where he and his wife still have family. Eyad's mother currently is with his brother in the town of Tartous, which is under Russian control. His wife Denise has family in Aleppo near the Turkish border, a city that experienced extensive damage from the quake. Rotary International has not yet announced any relief efforts; however, Convoy of Hope already is providing boots on the ground support through the nonprofit's Crisis Relief Fund.
