Guest presenter Jacob Santana shared insights on how a holistic approach to physical fitness and agility can foster long-term health. Those who braved last week’s wet and blustery weather were privy to valuable insights on body science and how to be fit for life from guest presenter and personal trainer Jacob Santana. A former body builder, Santana has spent nearly 25 years studying physiognomy, biomechanics, and injury prevention. He now works at the Carrollton location of OsteoStrong, a wellness center that focuses on the importance of maintaining bone health to optimize overall wellness. “A lot of times, we just live with aches and pains” from things like sciatica or a torn rotator cuff and don’t know what to do, Santana said. To address these issues, Santana develops personalized one-on-one sessions work to trigger strengthening throughout the musculoskeletal system. As an example, he has been working with past LNR President Dirk Dahlke, who for years has had stiffness in his shoulder and legs. Santana watched how Dahlke moved and developed a plan involving a series of simple exercises to incorporate different movements and reprogram the body by strengthening and aligning various muscles and bones. Dahlke already is seeing dramatic results after only two months and now is pain free. This holistic approach is the core of what Santana does as a Corrective Exercise Specialist. The body has more than 600 muscles, he explained, so even standard workout routines are limiting by their repetitive nature. Similarly, to mitigate pain from sciatica, you need to address not only compressed nerves and stretch the gluteal muscles and hamstrings, but also train calf and foot muscles, as well. “You have to think of your body as a whole,” Santana said, which includes strength, mobility or range of motion, posture, and nutrition, among other factors.
